![]() This version of “The Fall of the House of Usher” is filled with symbolism and it seems likely every viewer will have his or her own interpretation of what everything means but, make of it what you will, the movie is a true gem. And all of this is happening under the covert scrutiny of a white-faced man (the traveller), who is dressed in black and very creepy-looking. They are angled at about forty-five degrees and dropping downwards in an escalator-like fashion, possibly symbolic of Madeline being caught up in the machinations of the house. At the same time, the screen is framed to the left and the right by an overlay of some stairs. Meanwhile, at the top of the screen, the shadow of a hammer appears, rising and falling and obviously representative of the fact that she will soon be nailed inside the coffin. Madeline slumps her shoulders and, seeming to be filled with despair, collapses in front of the casket, resting her hand against it. Madeline sees a coffin leaned against the wall and, at this point, several things happen at once. Looking very dazed and confused, Madeline Usher is wandering the corridors and stairways of the house. One of the best scenes occurs about four minutes into the movie. This leads me to think we are symbollically referencing education as a staricase to higher power and elitism, which seems to be what he is all about. In the movie the main character had a name. The story seems to start right off with the couple seperating, she seems to walk off into a dream. A well known short story called the Fall of the House of Usher, by Edgar Allen Poe was made into a movie in 1960 and there are many differences. Credited with the adaptation was Dorothy Catt, headmistress of Hasting's Orchard School of Speech and. Escher-esque, staircases to staircases, some conventional, some abstract, but I point out it's escher-esque becuase it's the House of Usher, and can't help wondering if there is a deliberate link via this pun calling us to that similarity of names. The Fall of the House of Usher's first-time director was 22 year-old Hastings native George Ivan Barnett, whose only professional credit at that time was as a cameraman for the British Railways industrial short Down to the Sea in Trucks (1947). But off hand some interesting things that are symbolistic come to mind.
